Speakerinstallation

speakerinstallation  [video]

Arti et Amicale, Amsterdam; The Shortcut 10-03-2011 / 10-04-2011

2 Loudspeakers are connected to the input of an audiointerfaceA wooden surface is balancing on top of them. Another 10 loudspeakers are placed on the wooden surface. These amplified in- and outputs, together with the wooden surface, are creating an increasing and decreasing feedback. 6 distance sensors are scanning the presence of an audience. When there is no audience the installation is silent. By approaching the installation and walking around it, the sensors are activated and taking care for the amount of feedback. Jumping and tumbling green beans are making a rattling sound.

‘receive-send-receive’ is an interactive sound installation based entirely on feedback. Several sensors detect the movements of people present in the room, and these activate 4 speakers and 4 microphones. The time and the performers’ location in the room (the audience are the performers) are crucial to the sound generated (when no people are present, no feedback will occur).

In addition, every sound follows different patterns as it is played through the speakers in specific sequences.

two (or more) performers play their instruments (the laptop) according to a written score. No pre-recorded sounds are used. The score contains manipulations of basic features in Ableton Live. The open microphone of the laptop and a nearby speaker are creating a feedback with is completely controlled by a volume pedal and manipulations of the program. The score is also a choreography for movements of the hands and body of the performers. Improvisation and interaction are main elements of the performance.
